Published work on this compound consists mainly of in vitro experiments, animal studies, and small clinical investigations, a substantial share of which appeared in Russian-language journals. Sample sizes are generally small, control conditions differ between studies, and several endpoints rely on markers whose clinical meaning is itself debated. Reviews of the longevity field treat the peptide as an early example of telomerase-directed research rather than an established intervention. Regulatory treatment varies by country: some jurisdictions place it under prescription controls, others treat it as a laboratory material, and importation may be restricted regardless of local status.
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide whose sequence is alanine–glutamate–aspartate–glycine, commonly abbreviated AEDG. It was developed in Russia during the 1980s and 1990s by investigators associated with the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, who studied short peptides as regulators of gene expression and tissue function. The alternative spelling epithalon appears interchangeably in the literature, and the two names refer to the same molecule. Outside Russia it is encountered chiefly as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine, and it holds no approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency.
The peptide is a synthetic analogue of epithalamin, a preparation extracted from bovine pineal glands. Investigators sought a short, chemically defined molecule that would reproduce some of the endocrine and gerontological observations attributed to the glandular extract. Proposed mechanisms centre on induction of telomerase activity, an effect reported in cultured human somatic cells in the early 2000s, together with influences on melatonin secretion and neuroendocrine regulation. Those mechanisms remain incompletely characterised, and the reported telomerase response has not been consistently reproduced by independent groups working in comparable systems.
In its supplied form epitalon is a white to off-white powder, usually lyophilized and often hygroscopic. It dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers, and it is commonly handled as the acetate or trifluoroacetate salt to improve stability during purification and drying. The amide backbone is labile in aqueous media, so solutions are less durable than the dry solid. Handling notes in the chemical literature therefore emphasize keeping the powder dry, cool and shielded from light until it is dissolved.
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide whose sequence is alanine-glutamate-aspartate-glycine, written in single-letter code as AEDG. The four residues are joined by three peptide bonds, giving a linear backbone with no branching and no disulfide bridges. Its calculated molecular mass for the free form is approximately 390.3 daltons, a figure that rises when the compound is supplied as an acetate or trifluoroacetate salt. Because the chain is short, the molecule is defined entirely by its residue order rather than by any folded three-dimensional structure.
The compound is described in the literature as a derivative of epithalamin, a preparation obtained from bovine pineal tissue. Work on this peptide family was carried out mainly by a research group in Saint Petersburg beginning in the 1980s, and the substance was later registered for clinical use in Russia under the name Epitalon. Outside that region it is generally treated as a research chemical rather than an approved medicine. Statements about its biological activity rest on a relatively small number of studies, and independent replication remains limited.

== History == Pfizer brought the drug to market as Vfend. A generic version of the tablet form of voriconazole was introduced in the US in 2011 after Pfizer and Mylan settled litigation under the Hatch-Waxman Act; a generic version of the injectable form was introduced in 2012. In Europe, patent protection expired in 2011, and pediatric administrative exclusivity expired in 2016.
There were attempts to achieve friendly rapprochement between the Chilean regime and the Bolivian dictatorship of Hugo Banzer Suárez, to find a solution to Bolivia's landlocked nature, to ensure its neutrality, or even win its support from this country, in case there was a war against Peru. Through the Charaña Agreement, signed on February 8, 1975, both countries reestablished their diplomatic relations, interrupted since 1962. However, the agreement failed to advance due to additional demands from Peru, now under the command of the dictator Francisco Morales Bermúdez, since its territorial interests of Peru were intentionally violated. Instead of this agreement in its original version, Peru proposed that the territory be administered simultaneously by the three countries, however, both Chile and Bolivia refused to accept this complicated agreement, so Banzer again decided to break relations with Chile on March 17, 1978. On another occasion, the Peruvian Intelligence service obtained information that the Pinochet government was preparing a threat of war with Peru, as a way to end the internal problems of his regime. In 1976, the possibility of launching a preventive war against Peru was even evaluated, according to a dialogue he held that year with the then US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, during the meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Chile during that year. However, Kissinger made it clear that the position of the United States would depend on who started the conflict.
== Policy and advocacy == As the pre-eminent body representing human genetics in Oceania, the HGSA authors numerous policies and position statements to guide practitioners in the region. Such documents cover diverse topics such as genomic testing; screening for genetic disorders; ethical practice in genomics; genetic education; and clinical service delivery. In addition, the HGSA actively comments on policy and guidelines authored by other institutions and provides expert advice to government and genomic regulatory authorities.
=== Return to Biotin receptor isolation === Hofmann came full circle to his early work on biotin when he attached this vitamin to insulin. He spent a sabbatical leave in Aachen in Helmut Zahn's laboratory to learn techniques for modifying insulin). Using this information, he was able to chemically attach biotin to one of the three Lys residues of the insulin chains, thus producing an insulin that would bind to columns of avidin-Sepharose. The biotinyl-insulin receptor complex could then be displaced by biotin. With this tool, Hofmann and his coworkers successfully isolated a fully active insulin receptor. His final work was directed toward isolation of the ACTH receptor using the same approach used on the insulin receptor but by this time his health was in decline.
==== Active metabolites ==== A few of the metabolites of oxycodone have also been found to be active as MOR agonists, some of which notably have much higher affinity for (as well as higher efficacy at) the MOR in comparison. Oxymorphone possesses 3- to 5-fold higher affinity for the MOR than does oxycodone, while noroxycodone and noroxymorphone possess one-third of and 3-fold higher affinity for the MOR, respectively, and MOR activation is 5- to 10-fold less with noroxycodone but 2-fold higher with noroxymorphone relative to oxycodone. Noroxycodone, noroxymorphone, and oxymorphone also have longer biological half-lives than oxycodone.

=== Post‑marketing surveillance and safety signals === Following the launch of the once‑monthly paliperidone palmitate formulation (Xeplion) in Japan on 19 November 2013, the Early Post‑Marketing Phase Vigilance (EPPV) system detected a signal of increased mortality: 32 deaths were reported among an estimated 11,000 patients during the six‑month EPPV period. The most common causes of death were sudden cardiac death (12 confirmed and 4 suspected cases), suicide (7 cases), and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (4 cases). Of the 32 deaths, 59.4% were in patients over 50 years of age, 71.9% had cardiovascular risk factors, and 78.1% were receiving antipsychotic polypharmacy. Earlier in the EPPV period, in April 2014, it had been reported that 21 Japanese people who had received shots of the long-acting injectable paliperidone palmitate had died, out of 10,700 individuals prescribed the drug. An observational study of the French pharmacovigilance database identified 13 deaths and 14 life‑threatening events among 473 paliperidone palmitate-related adverse drug reaction reports between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2019. The reactions were primarily cardiorespiratory, with cardiac arrests and sudden unexpected deaths often occurring 10–14 days after a once‑monthly injection (or 11–24 days after a three‑monthly injection), consistent with peak plasma drug levels, leading the authors to hypothesize that supratherapeutic drug levels may underlie these events. Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide with the sequence alanine–glutamate–aspartate–glycine, also written AEDG. It was developed in Russian gerontology research and is studied for proposed effects on telomerase, melatonin regulation, and neuroendocrine function. It is not an approved pharmaceutical in the United States or the European Union.
No. Epithalamin is a peptide-rich extract prepared from bovine pineal glands, while epitalon is a short synthetic peptide designed as a defined analogue of it. The synthetic version was intended to provide a reproducible molecule with some of the same proposed biological activity.
Telomere elongation and telomerase activation have been reported in cultured human somatic cells, but evidence from living human subjects is limited and has not been independently confirmed at scale. Reported findings come largely from small studies with differing designs, so the question remains open rather than settled.
The peptide contains four residues in the order alanine, glutamate, aspartate and glycine, abbreviated AEDG. The chain is linear and held together by three peptide bonds. Its calculated mass for the uncharged free form is about 390.3 daltons.
