This is a working overview of mass spectrometry, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.

Regulatory treatment differs by country. No formulation of epitalon holds a marketing authorisation as a medicine in the United States or the European Union, where material sold for laboratory use is handled as a research chemical and is not intended for human consumption. In Russia, several short peptide preparations from the same institute's peptide series are registered medicinal products, and epitalon appears in that national context. Elsewhere it is frequently offered as a cosmetic ingredient, a category with lighter requirements. Advertising claims about longevity or disease prevention are restricted in most jurisdictions, which limits how sellers describe the compound.
Freeze-dried epitalon is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius in a sealed, desiccated container, protected from light. Short excursions at ambient temperature during shipping are generally tolerated, but repeated warming and cooling cycles encourage moisture uptake, which shortens shelf life. Once dissolved, the peptide is far less stable than the solid: aqueous solutions are subject to hydrolysis and to deamidation at the aspartate and glutamate residues. Working solutions are therefore held refrigerated and used within days, and repeated freezing and thawing of the same vial is best avoided.
Identity and purity are checked by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, usually with ultraviolet detection near 214 nanometres, where the peptide bond absorbs. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected mass and reveals whether truncation products or adducts are present. Acid hydrolysis followed by amino acid analysis gives the residue ratio, which should approximate one alanine, one glutamate, one aspartate and one glycine. Counter-ions such as acetate or trifluoroacetate remain in the dried product and lower net peptide content, so a stated purity figure on a label does not by itself describe how much peptide a vial holds.
Identity is normally established by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, a pairing that separates components and confirms molecular mass at once. Purity is quoted as a percentage from the chromatogram, and figures above ninety-five percent are a frequent commercial specification. Amino acid analysis or sequencing supplies further confirmation when required. Because many short peptides behave similarly under chromatography, retention time alone does not establish sequence; the mass measurement is what separates one tetrapeptide from another, and certificates should report both.
Short peptides such as AEDG are normally supplied as a freeze-dried solid and are kept dry, cold, and shielded from light. Holding at minus twenty degrees Celsius is common for the long term, while a refrigerator suffices for brief periods before use. The material takes up moisture to some degree, so containers should stay sealed and be allowed to reach room temperature before opening, which limits condensation on the contents. Repeated warming and cooling of a single container is discouraged because it admits water and can lower the amount of intact peptide.

According to the constitution of Greece, higher education institutions (HEI) include universities, technical universities, and specialist institutions. HEI undergraduate programs are government-funded and do not charge tuition. A quarter of HEI postgraduate programs are tuition-free. After individual assessments, thirty percent of Greek students are entitled to attend any of the statutory postgraduate programs without tuition fees. Founded as a national institution in 1926, the Academy of Athens is the highest research establishment in Greece. Private higher education institutions could not operate in Greece and were not recognized as degree-awarding bodies by the Greek government until the law 5094/2024 was passed in 2024, permitting the establishment and operation of private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Such HEIs are yet to be accredited and established.
== Research == From the beginning of his career Bengt Mannervik studied enzymes of glutathione metabolism, including studies of levels in different tissues, structure and catalytic activity of glutathione transferase, a purification method, a detailed review on the isoenzymes of glutathione transferase, and many others. These publications have had a major influence on the field of glutathione biochemistry. Each of those mentioned above, together with three others, had been cited more than 1000 times by the end of 2024, the first more than 5000 times, leading to an h index of 89, as calculated by Google Scholar. In all he has had nearly 600 publications, with a combined total of more than 47000 citations. His interest in glutathione transferases has continued after his retirement, for example studies of their role as efficient ketosteroid isomerases and as enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of moulting hormones in mosquitoes transmitting malaria and yellow fever. In addition to the work directed specifically at enzymes involved in glutathione metabolism and detoxication, Mannervik coauthored texts on molecular toxicology. He also studied various more general aspects of enzymology, including graphical analysis, error structure of kinetic experiments, weighting of observations, regression methods, directed enzyme evolution, and discrimination between models. Major contributions were more recently directed to the evolution of novel functions by in vitro protein evolution.
The serine has an -OH group that is able to act as a nucleophile, attacking the carbonyl carbon of the scissile peptide bond of the substrate. A pair of electrons on the histidine nitrogen has the ability to accept the hydrogen from the serine -OH group, thus coordinating the attack of the peptide bond. The carboxyl group on the aspartic acid in turn hydrogen bonds with the histidine, making the nitrogen atom mentioned above much more electronegative. The whole reaction can be summarized as follows:
=== Blood supply === The glans penis receives blood from the internal pudendal artery through its branch, the dorsal artery of the penis, which also supplies the foreskin, and the penile shaft. Behind the corona, the terminal branches of the dorsal arteries anastomose with the axial arteries through perforating branches before they end in the glans. Branches of the dorsal artery curve around each side of the distal shaft to enter the glans and the frenulum ventrally. Venous drainage of the penis begins at the base of the glans. Small tributaries deriving from the corona form a venous plexus at the neck of the penis, known as the retro-coronal, or retro-balanic, plexus. Smaller paired venules run into the frenulum and the glans from its ventral surface. The deep dorsal vein, one of the two dorsal veins of the penis, serves as a common vessel receiving blood drained from the glans and the two corpora cavernosa through the circumflex veins that surround them.
The first writer to advocate a lectin-free diet was Peter J. D'Adamo, a naturopath best known for promoting the blood type diet. He argued that lectins may damage a person's blood type by interfering with digestion, food metabolism, hormones, insulin production—and so should be avoided. D'Adamo provided no scientific evidence nor published data for his claims, and his diet has been criticized for making inaccurate statements about biochemistry. Steven Gundry proposed a lectin-free diet in his book The Plant Paradox (2017). It excludes a large range of commonplace foods including whole grains, legumes, and most fruit, as well as the nightshade vegetables: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, and chili peppers. Gundry's claims about lectins are considered pseudoscience. His book cites studies that have nothing to do with lectins, and some that show—contrary to his own recommendations—that avoiding the whole grains wheat, barley, and rye will allow increase of harmful bacteria while diminishing helpful bacteria.

== Cell internalisation == Cell uptake/internalisation still represents the biggest hurdle towards successful oligonucleotide (ON) therapeutics. A straightforward uptake, like for most small-molecule drugs, is hindered by the polyanionic backbone and the molecular size of ONs. The exact mechanisms of uptake and intracellular trafficking towards the place of action are still largely unclear. Moreover, small differences in ON structure/modification (vide supra) and difference in cell type leads to huge differences in uptake. It is believed that cell uptake occurs on different pathways after adsorption of ONs on the cell surface. Notably, studies show that most tissue culture cells readily take up ASOs (phosphorothiote linkage) in a non-productive way, meaning that no antisense effect is observed. In contrast to that conjugation of ASO with ligands recognised by G-coupled receptors leads to an increased productive uptake. Next to that classification (non-productive vs. productive), cell internalisation mostly proceeds in an energy-dependant way (receptor mediated endocytosis) but energy-independent passive diffusion (gymnosis) may not be ruled out. After passing the cell membrane, ON therapeutics are encapsulated in early endosomes which are transported towards late endosomes which are ultimately fused with lysosomes containing degrading enzymes at low pH. To exert its therapeutic function, the ON needs to escape the endosome prior to its degradation.
In addition, a direct joining of ribose, a nucleobase, and phosphate to make a ribonucleotide (the building block of RNA) is not currently chemically feasible. Alternative prebiotic mechanisms have been proposed including cyanosulfidic prebiotic chemistries.

Netherlands: Prime Minister Dick Schoof stated that the Dutch cabinet was "closely following the developments in the Caribbean region and the situation in Venezuela following the US attacks," saying that "safety in the region is of great importance to Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire." Foreign Affairs Minister David van Weel stated that "The Kingdom of the Netherlands does not recognise the Maduro regime and calls for a swift return to democracy. The Netherlands urges all parties to prevent further escalation and to adhere to international law." Norway: Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide stated that even though Norway does not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro's presidency, the American military operation marked "a grave escalation of an already highly volatile situation" and that it was "not in accordance with international law." Poland: Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the "U.S. strike on Venezuela affects the entire world," and that he hoped that 2026 would not be more eventful than 2025. Portugal: Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated that the Portuguese government is "focused on the future and on the restoration of a full democracy in which Venezuelans can freely choose their future." and that the government is "taking note of President Trump and the role of the United States in promoting a stable, peaceful, democratic, and inclusive transition in Venezuela as swiftly as possible.
While the recreational use of (and consequently the distribution of) cannabis is illegal in majority of countries, recreational distribution is legal in some countries, such as Canada, and medical distribution is permitted in some places, such as 38 of the 50 US states (although importation and distribution is still federally prohibited). Beginning in 2014, Uruguay became the first country to legalize cultivation, sale, and consumption of cannabis for recreational use for adult residents. In 2018, Canada became the second country to legalize use, sale and cultivation of cannabis. The first few weeks were met with extremely high demand, most shops being out of stock after operating for only four days. Cannabis use is tolerated in some areas, most notably the Netherlands, which has legalized the possession and licensed sale (but not cultivation) of the drug. Many nations have decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Due to the hardy nature of the cannabis plant, marijuana is grown all across the world; today, it is the world's most popular illegal drug with the highest level of availability. Cannabis is grown legally in many countries for industrial, non-drug use (known as hemp) as well. Cannabis-hemp may also be planted for other non-drug domestic purposes, such as seasoning that occurs in Aceh. The demand for cannabis around the world, coupled with the drug's relative ease of cultivation, makes the illicit cannabis trade one of the primary ways in which organized criminal groups finance many of their activities.

In spring 2026, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union defined a relative potency factor (RPF) of 0.002 perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) equivalents for TFA, while a threshold of 0.0044 µg/L PFOA equivalents for the sum of 25 PFAS (now including TFA) in inland surface water was set.
The Weird Sisters in Shakespeare's Macbeth used the fur of a bat in their brew. In Western culture, the bat is often a symbol of the night and its foreboding nature. The bat is a primary animal associated with fictional characters of the night, both villainous vampires, such as Count Dracula and the earlier Varney the Vampire, and heroes, such as the DC Comics character Batman. The bat is sometimes used as a heraldic symbol in many European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Spain and the UK. They have also been used as symbols in the militaries of the UK, US and Israel. Three US states have an official state bat. Texas and Oklahoma are represented by the Mexican free-tailed bat, while Virginia is represented by the Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus).

== Nitrogen-16 == The radioisotope 16N is the dominant radioactivity source in the coolant water of nuclear reactors cooled by water during normal operation. It is produced from 16O (in water) via an (n,p) reaction, in which the 16O atom captures a neutron and expels a proton. It has a short half-life of 7.13 seconds, but its decay back to 16O produces high-energy gamma radiation (6.13 MeV principal line). Because of this, access to the primary coolant piping in a pressurised water reactor must be restricted during reactor power operation. It is a sensitive and immediate indicator of leaks from the primary coolant system to the secondary steam cycle and is the primary means of detection for such leaks.

The solid is kept cold, dry and dark, typically at minus twenty degrees Celsius, in a sealed container with desiccant. Dissolved material is kept refrigerated and used promptly. Freezing and thawing a solution repeatedly is avoided because it accelerates degradation.
Reversed-phase chromatography with ultraviolet detection gives a purity percentage, while mass spectrometry confirms identity. Amino acid analysis checks the residue composition. Buyers typically request a certificate of analysis showing these measurements for the specific lot.
It is not authorised as a medicine in the United States or the European Union. Material is sold there as a research chemical or cosmetic ingredient. Some related short peptides are registered drugs in Russia, which is a distinct national situation rather than a general approval.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is run alongside mass spectrometry. The chromatogram separates components and gives a purity figure, while the mass spectrum confirms that the measured molecular mass matches the expected sequence. Neither measurement on its own is treated as sufficient.
